So a week ago yesterday I was hit by a pickup truck while riding my bike to work. The guy that hit me pulled away from a stop sign without ever seeing me. Fortunately I wasn't seriously injured. Apart form some severe muscle strain and some bruising that has surfaced over the last few days I've come away relatively unscathed. I count myself lucky for that. My bike on the other hand didn't come out as well as I did. Mildred and I shared many memorable rides together including 3 Bike MS Escape to the Lake (Erie) charity rides. She'll be missed.

THREE RIVERS ARTS FESTIVAL

Day three of 3RAF here in downtown Pittsburgh. We've been through a few major thunderstorms and come out relatively unscathed. Yesterday was very trying with torrential downpours threatening to cave in the roof of our tent. Very little foot traffic because of the weather as well. Today was a new day though and the skies have parted and people have come out to see some art! special thanks to the ever awesome Susan & Ted who continue to have much faith in my work. Thanks guys! Two more days left in the fest, if you haven't come by yet, please do!

PGH TECH DATA AWARDS

I was selected as a finalist for the Pittsburgh Technology Council's 2010 Design, Art & Technology Awards ( DATA ). I was quite honored to be part of such a prestigious event and while I didn't win any awards for my entries, I did meet some very nice people and am eager to apply again next year. Congrats to all those who were awarded last night at the awards ceremony and a big thanks to Kim Harvey and the PGH Tech Council for putting it all together. See you next year!

THREE RIVERS POSTER CONTEST

So this year the Three River Arts Festival held a poster contest to help promote the 10 day festival. I'm happy to announce that I won the Grand Prize! My poster will be featured prominently through the fest and downtown and was the building block for the rest of their ad campaign. Pretty cool stuff. A while back my friend Marc Defiant asked me to come up with some t-shirt designs for the band Anti-Flag. I was excited about the prospect and though neither of these designs got used, I had fun doing them. Both are based on song lyrics or titles from the bands latest album.

So for my third attempt at this Cigar Box Thing, I decided to push the boundaries of painting on one. I wanted to make it at the very least an art piece and if at all possible,a playable art piece. In the end I think I'll refrain from this sort of "All Over" painting in the future, but it was nice to experiment. It was recently featured in a one night art show called "Art Mart" at Fast>>Fwd Gallery in Lawrenceville.

I'm very excited about my most recent tinkerings. I've begun making cigar box guitars. Well, at least I've made two... It's quite a lot of fun though and I think I'll be making a lot more in the near future.

My first attempt was a bit crude, but given that I used wood I had laying around the shop ( mostly Pine ) and old bicycle parts, I can't complain too much. Various bits of an old shifter make up the majority of the hardware. A brake pad is being used as the nut while a chain ring serves as a decorative touch for the sound hole. I used actual guitar strings but was given a bright idea this morning of using brake cable for the strings instead ( shoulda though of that myself...). I'll have to re string it and see what it sounds like. For it's simplicity and crudeness it actually produces quite a naturally distorted sound. I'm determined to mike it and use it in some of my recordings.

The second attempt serves two different purposes. The first being that I get to further smooth out wrinkles that occurred in CBG 1.0 as well as make a gift for my Father for Christmas. My Dad does not play guitar but told me that he always wanted to learn banjo. While I can't afford to buy him a banjo, I can afford to make him a cigar box guitar. One thing I had going for me right out of the gate this time round was a a supplier for real cigar boxes... A co-worker's Father recently closed the doors on a long time cigar shop, leaving hundreds of empty boxes with nothing to do besides take up real estate in his Father's garage. I've made my plea for taking as many as he's willing to give me off his hands.

So, cigar box(es) in hand I laid out my plans. I knew from my first experience that tuning machines were a necessity. It's true, you can make tuning pegs that will kind of work but authentic tuning machines make life easier. I also wanted to pick up a nice piece of hardwood for the neck. $19 later I had enough supplies for two guitars and was ready to go. I had wanted to use fret wire on this piece as well but financially it wasn't viable and I also couldn't wait for shipping so I went ahead without.

All in all I'm very pleased with the outcome, it looks good and is fun to play. The sound in general leaves something to be desired but I've taken note of where I think the problem areas are and will remedy them on my next attempt. It sounds a bit like a half sized guitar mated with a ukulele.

I did this poster for the Decemberist's "Hazards of Love Poster Contest" which they posted on one of their fan forums. The contest was for a show they did at SXSW at which they were going to ( and did ) play their new album in it's entirety. I didn't win but I liked doing the poster as it has a lot of fun elements in it and is for one of my favorite bands. Perhaps in the future I'll be able to do a show poster for them. Speaking of which, I picked up this poster by Strawberryluna at the Decemberists show here in PGH on Friday. They were fantastic, as is her poster.

GP COLORING BOOK #2

THE CANVAS PROJECT

The good people down at The Art House Co Op allowed me to submit for their show " The Canvas Project". The Artists involved with said project were given 5 mini 3" x 3" canvases as well as 5 words ( that were submitted by people who visited the website ) that each artist had to interpret. These guys are all about color and happiness and for someone who is usually content to dwell in earth tones and melancholy, it's a nice change of pace. Local metal band Our Dying Moment asked me to do a design for them for general use. They said they wanted something in the way of a person choking and I think I was able to pull that off. They seemed happy with the design and have gotten shirts made, I'll include picts when I get my copy. The drummer, Mike, has asked me to do another drawing for his other band Neroxx as well so stay tuned. Enjoy.

THREE RIVERS ARTS FEST

I suppose it's a bit late to be posting about this as this is the morning of the last day but I was accepted and have been showing at this years Three Rivers Arts Festival in downtown Pittsburgh. It's been interesting to say the least! The response to my work has been quite polar in that people either seem to love it or hate it. The facial expressions I've encountered have been a true pleasure to watch parade in front of my booth though that's for sure.

There are a few things I'll likely change or alter if and when I do the show again next year or do other shows in the future. I've spoken with several artists, namely Tim Hooper who is a very cool guy, who've been extremely helpful and encouraging to a Rookie like me. I think if I can manage to keep my steam up and continue cranking out pieces, I should be able to get a few gallery gigs in the near future.

I'd like to thank those of you who came and bought pieces from me this week, I'll be in touch with you all with special offers and updates as they come down the pike. Also, thanks to everyone who has helped me out over the last month or so and extended themselves a bit further than normal in an effort to get me here. Really appreciate it.

I've had the uncanny luck recently of befriending a couple guys who happen to have been starting up their own art gallery. There will be many more posts about FREEBIRD GALLERY in the coming months, but for now lets start with Emmeric. Emmeric is an LA based artist who does performance painting and who's high energy is brought to life in his paintings. Abstract and yet yet subtly familiar to those of us who know of the seedier side of things. At any rate, Josh and David ( The owners ) asked me to do promo stuff for Emmerics upcoming show. They both liked the look of my screen printed posters and we all agreed that it would be cool to do something like that for this show and ( their idea) every subsequent show. A friend mentioned a while back that he'd been doing some work with a movie production company and that if the opportunity ever came around, he'd drop my name. About 6 months later I get a call from him saying that this guy ( Jeff Monahan ) was going to be contacting me for help with a project he'd been working on featuring short stories by George A. Romero. I jumped at the opportunity. After several chats with Jeff and several revisions, we nailed down the concept and had a finished piece which will be a large part of the Advertising, the cover of the dvd, and also part of the opening sequence. I was recently hired to do a logo/ t-shirt design for (my new favorite client) Seth, who was interested in making shirts for his brother Shane. I immediately liked the idea as he wanted a sort of heraldry crest with the words "Trained By Shane" on it, flanked on either side by two griffins. Sweet! On the front of the shirt he wanted the same crest but with "TBS" incorporated in some way. The end result:

About a month ago an old employer, ( my first ever employer, in fact ) Rodney, contacted me about doing a logo for his "new" restaurant O'holleran's. The "new" part was actually a remodel he was doing to a restaurant he'd been running for some time as well as changing the name to simply "O's". To complete the vision, he commissioned me to create a logo that would encapsulate the look and feel of the not only the eatery, but also the surrounding area. Located on the Oregon coast, O'holleran's is a long established dinner spot with a reputation for good food without pretension. I wanted to do something that hearkened back to the days of hand-painted signage, and sore fronts of Main St, USA. After the initial sketch, we did a few revisions and a couple color tweak to arrive here:

Brian asked if I'd like to do the poster for his annual Independence Day Populaire and of course I jumped at the chance. Not only that, I thought, "Hey I could screen print these bad boys!" and that's exactly what I'm gonna do. Posting a little bit of my process in the early stages here..

A couple of weeks ago I got the opportunity to work with the good people at Parade of Flesh Productions to create a poster for an upcoming show they were putting on with The Strange Boys in Dallas. Being that it would mark my first "real" screen printing gig I was happy to do whatever it took to get the job done. When doing the design I made sure to kept it super simple as to cut down on potential problems during the run. There is really only one element ( the "strange boy") the really needed attention when registering, otherwise it went of without a hitch. Woo! Number one is in the books!
